Typeface hunting
Today I travelled around Leeds through the main city and secluded back alleys in the search for typefaces that we neglect on a day to day basis, passing it by and not giving a second thought. The typefaces had to relate to Leeds and its culture. This was a great opportunity for me to discover new type forms and also their uses in the world.
The reason I took this first photo was the contrast between the vibrant and colourful font and the decaying building around it. To me it’s quite ironic as it states ‘united we stand’ however the surroundings show quite the opposite. The font is quite basic however it’s the context that it’s in which is what really grasped me to it.
The reason I chose this font was a little like the last one but the opposite at the same time. It’s a very weathered scene and also quite a sketchy looking typeface. I really like how it’s style reflects the thing it’s advertising, for instance you wouldn’t advertise something in the ward chambers with time roman.
I really enjoy this piece of ghost writing across this building as it really show some it’s age and depth. It gives the modern looking bar below it a vintage kind of theme and it really sets a tone for the whole alleyway. From the type design and how damaged it look so I reckon this was made back in the 50’s or 60’s. I wander if I could somehow create this design myself and make it look as old as it doesn’t here.
I chose this one because once again, it shows some contrast between modern and old fashioned design. The old design aspect being the architecture and the typeface used down the side of the building. It kind of reminds me of something you might see in Brooklyn like a hotel sign. Then the modern aspect being the coloured in windows which is quite subtle but really grasps me. All these elements make the fonts really suit its location and also its layout down going vertically down instead of the standard left to right.
This last photo doesn't really seem to have any relation to Leeds at all however this tag can be found all around the city. I know it is also quite a basic form of graffiti type however the reason I was so intrigued by it was because of the vibrant colours surrounding it. It all makes quite a satisfying colour pallet and and the dirty and decaying wall really compliments the whole scene.
