Film and Poster Studio Brief 2

Film Poster Studio Brief 2

Today we attempted to respond to the film be creating our own versions of the film poster. This would help us combine ideas to create one ultimate design. Given the fact we weren't aloud to source imagery, we thought it would be best to go and collect materials on our own for the designs. We wanted to replicate Johnson's work in a way so we thought that using stamps would work very well given the fact he did this a lot too. He also posted his work to his friends so maybe we can relate postage back to the entire film festival brief. We went to the market and managed to find a bunch of stamps and also an old cigarette package with collectable cards inside. I decided that I would use these as a main focus for my design.

Here is some collaged experiments with the stamps and collectables from the cigarette packet. I quite like how it turned out but it wasn't anywhere near done yet. I also had to add someones face to the image because Johnson would use a lot of faces in his work, specifically icons from the 60's. We were not going to use one of these icons however, because we were not aloud to use source imagery. Instead we took one of out own photos of someone in our group which I guess made it more individual and fully sourced from ourselves.

Here is a final development of this idea which I have also added a halftone too. I think I may have to further develop this idea or create a new one however since I don't think this will work when processing it for screen printing. I would however like to continue using these stamps and such that we collected.

Here is a simple but effective bit of work I managed to create with one of the stamps and one of the collectable cards. I really like how this has turned out and it really replicates Ray Johnson's style quite well. However, given the wide variety of colours in this image I once again do not think this would print very well in the screen printing process. Maybe I could combine these ideas to make one ultimate one.

Interview with Tash Willcocks

Interview with Tash Willcocks

Today our group interviews Tash Willcocks from Hyper Island and we asked her all the questions from out previous research. She gave us a lot of really useful information that will hopefully help us develop ourselves and our creative minds. The key piece of information that she gave us was the film that we has to watch and recreate the poster for. She gave us the film How to Draw a Bunny, which was a documentary about the late Ray Johnson and his final exhibition which was his own death. This was a very interesting documentary and I look forward to designing this poster with his work in mind.

Here is a list of the answers and information she gave us during the talk:

  1. Internet

  • Pros
  • Reach out to other people around the world
  • There is no right or wrong
  • Get your work seen by others
  • Share your ideas
  • Cons
  • Makes us crazy
  • Follow people that you don't agree with, not ones you do
  • Tech is not the answer

    2. Become a master at what you do

  • Turn your phone off and go for a walk
  • Bus stops and chip shops
  • Allow yourself to be bored
  • Explore, go out of your comfort zones
  • Do things you wouldn't normally do

    3. Presenting

  • Used to be shy
  • Always been chatty
  • Never use notes
  • Enjoy what you're talking about
  • Interactive
  • Drawing your slides
  • Be passionate

    4. Other mentionable comments

  • Likes receiving likes but don't live your life by it
  • Also judges success on talking to people and their reaction
  • Don't think about things too much
  • Start things straight away
  • Find something that inspires you
  • Don't solve the problem, elongate it
  • No right or wrong
  • Keep practising
  • If it scares you do it
  • Don't worry about what other people think

Leeds Light Night

Leeds Light Night

Last night I attended Leeds Light Night which took place all around the city. There was loads of really cool displays and shows all involving lights and performance arts. I found these quite interesting and may inspire me in future projects. For instance I could involve light, reflections and shadows introducing a whole new media and possibilities to my artistic arsenal. I always enjoy attending exhibitions that involve other media instead of just graphic design, as it all inspires me to approach my work from other angles and try new things out without fear.

Studio Brief 2-Questions

Studio Brief 2-Questions

We were given a task to create a set of questions for a chosen designer, that would benefit our design skills. Our given designer was Tash Wilcocks which I had done some extensive research into her work and projects.  She is a programme leader at Hyper Island in Manchester and has several on going projects such as Mumdameaday and MapMyMCR. Some of the question we have devised.

  • You have previously spoken about pros and cons of the internet in design, how do think modern technology can negatively effect new designers?
  • The way you present comes across very honest creating a trust between you and your audience, how have you developed your presentational skills as your career has progressed?
  • You've had many successful personal projects that have developed such ass Mundaneaday, what was your process when you started your project?
  • What film do you recommend to enhance young designers?
  • In your project MapMyMCR you took inspiration from the city you were living in, as young designers how would you suggest we take inspiration from where we live?
  • How do you judge success in your design projects?

OUGD502 END OF MODULE EVALUATION

During this module, I have come a long way on the social side of graphic design. I have discovered and learnt a lot about networking, dealin...
